To me this advice is basically "write unmaintainable unit tests". If the advice is to make unit tests read more like a specification then I am for it.

The key difference is that it's possible to write any unit test in such a way that avoids both code duplication and fancy things like loops, flow control, functions; so the unit test reads more like a spec. However, if you can't figure out how to do that then write the loop or whatever because the reasons behind these coding best practices still apply in unit tests.

To put it another way, I would rather see a loop where a loop makes sense than an unrolled loop with the loops contents duplicated ten times or so.

For example, you see a loop in a unit test. If the advice is there should be no loops in a unit test, the easiest way to fix this is to unroll the loop. This solves nothing, because the unit test still has whatever problem it had originally with the addition of redundant code coming from unrolling the loop. This is the sort of thing I have seen in actual code reviews. This is the sort of thing I've had the unpleasant task of arguing about. This is where I'm coming from.

Better solutions to the loop question depend on why the loop exists.....

If the loop exists because it's really testing multiple things then those things should be in separate unit tests (with no copy and pasted code setup code). If the loop exists because it's building some test data then that's perfectly fine too - put it in a function. Stick the function somewhere that makes sense and make sure there's some basic test to make sure you're getting what you think you are. If the loop exists to compare the contents of two arrays then you can delete it because there's already a library for that.. etc..

So yes, it should read like a spec. But no, you don't get a free pass from coding best practices to accomplish that.Andrewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17391659235860245424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451086006168569993.post-89539110106732718312014-10-01T16:48:09.637-04:002014-10-01T16:48:09.637-04:00Maybe a string concatenation isn't a convincin...Maybe a string concatenation isn't a convincing example, but can you really tolerate ifs and loops in your tests?
The worst cases I've seen are when the test duplicates the implementation logic of the SUT - rather than giving concrete examples of how it should behave.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04765456269439067183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451086006168569993.post-18333813338861893772013-10-12T08:57:12.914-04:002013-10-12T08:57:12.914-04:00I have F1 GA- a75 d3h, 2xsata2x2TB,1xsata3x3TB

I had AHCI mode working properly, went to install Windows 7, let the Win7 installer partition the drives automatically, and now the system hangs when running through the AHCI scan on POST. I initially assumed the older HDD I was using had picked a bad time to die, but now I'm thinking perhaps Win7 messed up the partitioning.
I've had luck fixing similar problems with the DISKPART tool that comes with Windows. It's a real pain to use - I can partition a 'nix system with parted without much difficulty, but I still have trouble with DISKPART. IIRC the "clean" command is the one that blows away partition tables. I'll have to give it a shot.DanielMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06723269497173268800noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451086006168569993.post-71896189172113700312012-01-21T04:45:37.669-05:002012-01-21T04:45:37.669-05:00Agree with Preshing, Amdahl's model is more pe...Agree with Preshing, Amdahl's model is more pessimistic in approachPraveenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11678248934606199036noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451086006168569993.post-80165216019195174642012-01-18T19:13:16.532-05:002012-01-18T19:13:16.532-05:00Seeing data from an real application is fascinatin...Seeing data from an real application is fascinating. I'll have to generate the same graph as you did to see if they match up.
The microbench worries me, though. Especially since I work mostly in Java where big blocks of code and get removed by the JIT.

The "contention probability" factor in Eyerman's graph generator is to model multiple different locks. It's a lock granularity factor. In a system with a single lock it's always 1. The probability of contending for a lock is modelled in the formula implicitly.Andrewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17391659235860245424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451086006168569993.post-87720531742587787182012-01-12T21:30:57.598-05:002012-01-12T21:30:57.598-05:00Nice post Andrew. Assuming that Amdahl's Law a...Nice post Andrew. Assuming that Amdahl's Law applies to critical sections is basically like saying that no other threads can run when one thread is in the critical section, which is obviously false. As your data suggests, the net performance is much better than that.

I've written a similar post called Locks Aren't Slow; Lock Contention Is. I didn't use any mathematical model -- instead I took performance measurements from a real, running application. It's limited to 4 cores, since that was all I had available. You can download the source, though it's written in C++.

Taking a quick look at Eyerman's graph generator, his model seems to differ from my results for two reasons. One is that he asks you to specify the contention probability, whereas in my test suite, the threads are modeled using a Poisson process, making the contention probability implicit. The other is that I'm note sure his model takes the cost of the lock itself into account. (Haven't read the paper.)

I quite like your analogies about painting the house and moving day. Very apt!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451086006168569993.post-41435370903362260302011-06-03T21:11:13.085-04:002011-06-03T21:11:13.085-04:00Well, if you want to learn more about UIs the book...Well, if you want to learn more about UIs the books I mentioned in that article are definitely a good place to start.

If I have to choose between branch-and-bound algorythms or pipeline parallelism I would definitely go with pipeline parallelism. I think pipelining in general is a fascinating concept and has all sorts of applications both in code and in life. I've always thought my washing machine and dryer as being a two-stage pipeline. The way the CPU and GPU interact to build ascene also works as a two-stage pipeline. Once you understand pipelines to start to see them all over the place. At the car wash, at the checkout counter, going through security at an airport.

Arstechnica did a wonderful article about pipelining as it relates to processors.

http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2004/09/pipelining-1.ars

I liked your article too:
http://www.futurechips.org/tips-for-power-coders/one-lane-highways-programming-new-in-order-cores.html

I suspect that desktop processors probably won't switch to an in-order setup for a while; basically unless they reach a thermal limit of sort sort. History has shown that OOO beats in-order with higher clock frequencies. The POWER 6 architecture is a weird aberation in that sense. It should be noted that IBM decided to go back to an out-of-order core for POWER 7.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POWER7

For low power processors ditching OOO and the instruction window are massive wins. So it a great deal of sense for them to be in order. Aparently they are big power hogs. Here is what I have discovered through many hours of experimentation:

It has something to do with the MBR records. I can cause this to happen by copying partitions using Paragon Partition Manager 11 in Windows 7. I have also caused this to happen when installing BOOTIT NG. However, I have used BOOTIT NG to FIX the problem several times.

I have repaired the problem several ways. Disconnect the drive, boot into windows using AHCI (assuming it is not your boot drive), then plug in the drive (AHCI allows hot swapping). Windows can now see the drive (both XP or Windows 7)

I have fixed the problem IN SOME CASES by setting an active partition or clearing it from Windows Disk Manager. In the case of a dynamic disk, this will not work.

From BOOTIT NG I have also fixed the problem. First, however, you must connect the drive to a controller set to IDE mode (change bios to IDE) so the BIOS will boot and recognize the drive at boot time.

In BOOT IT NG, I fixed a couple of disks by inspecting the MBR, through VIEW MBR which then reports and error in the CHS which I then tell it to fix (inspecting the properties on each partition might display a similar error). I have also fixed the hard disks with the dynamic disks by selecting the option FILL E-CHS.

I think this is a huge BUG or problem with the AHCI bios, but no one seems to talk about it.Schwartzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14672437377730410871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451086006168569993.post-50983820863148467832010-08-30T20:44:13.137-04:002010-08-30T20:44:13.137-04:00Oh sweet, thanks Andrew.Oh sweet, thanks Andrew.Guillaumehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00722827827627546541noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451086006168569993.post-78383432457404556592009-09-17T17:19:04.146-04:002009-09-17T17:19:04.146-04:00I'm fairly certain that buses are rear wheel d...I'm fairly certain that buses are rear wheel drive so you couldn't just apply the handbrake.. unless buses have a handbrake that works on the front wheels. It would also depend on whether the bomb is hooked up to the speedometer. Maybe they're using a GPS? Even if they were using a speedometer, is it connected to the drive wheels?

The real solution to the bus problem is simply to not go 50 miles an hour in the first place. That way the bomb isn't armed and you can avoid the whole sticky mess. I think that movie would be a bit boring, though.Andrewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17391659235860245424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7451086006168569993.post-52307372483563821042009-06-11T21:49:23.016-04:002009-06-11T21:49:23.016-04:00I have the answer to the question about the bus!
...I have the answer to the question about the bus!

Drive on some snow or gravel. Apply the emergency brake, and floor the gas.

The bus won't go anywhere, but the front wheels will spin, making the speedometer think you are going fast.

PS. I like the zeno progress bar, and I think I will use it.Arshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01917719465671866924noreply@blogger.com
